Licton Springs to hold annual picnic

The Licton Springs Community Council is planning to hold its fourth annual neighborhood picnic on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The picnic will take place at Licton Springs Park Playground, at N 97th Street and Ashworth Avenue N.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Anzanga Marimba Ensembla and, in honor of the recently-released Licton Spring's historical booklet, there will be a reading by Emily K. Gehman, age 11, from "Blazing the Way" by Emily Inez Denny. The passage retells another picnic at Licton Mineral Springs when a black bear and her cub surprised the picnickers. The Bubbleman will also make an appearance.

Larry's Market will provide hot dogs and sodas for the event.

U-Heights hosts film series

The newly-formed Puget Sound Cinema Society is offering a series of film shorts nights for the next several months.

The Puget Sound Cinema Society was formed earlier this year by co-founders Omar Willey and Anthony Reed. The two, who are both filmmakers, decided to form the group because of the difficulty they saw in getting local films exhibited in Seattle.

"There's an awful lot of genius in Seattle," said Willey. "This is a great town for artistic creativity and a terrible town for exhibition.

Willey, a Licton Springs resident, has been a film maker for 13 years, writing and directing his own shorts and feature length movies on a budget of a few thousand dollars a piece. While he currently makes a living as a freelance writer, Willey also spent 12 years as a local pastry chef, an experience which plays a big part in the Depth of Focus series. Willey bakes goodies such as tarts, cakes and fresh breads for each event.
